Wind energy

The use of wind is one of the essential opportunities for Polish power industry, since wind is an inexpensive and ecological source power. The European Union experts estimate that the power generated by wind turbines in Poland in 2005 could be 600MW, and in 2050 - already 6000MW. According to the World Bank's report Poland is capable of using more wind energy, even up to about 4-5PJ more, every year.

The best weather conditions to establish wind turbines are in the region of north-east Poland (Suwałki region) as well as on the coast, where the speed of wind at the height of 30 metres is about 5-6 m/s. The production of electric power in wind turbines in Poland is currently about 8GWh.

The power generated by the wind energy plants in Europe in 1998 was 6553MW, among which the newly- was 1766MW. The demand for this kind of energy in the world is growing yearly by about 18% (according to data of May 1999). The above mentioned amounts in the world were relatively: 10153 and 2597MW.

In Denmark, which is the leader in constructing and using wind turbines, the price of 1kWh fell by 30% (in comparison to 1987); it was the effect of the use of wind energy.

ESP S.A. is the company that is implementing the use of renewable sources of energy, and thus we will be trying to take advantage of favourable economic and legal situation in order to build wind turbines; they will be constructed within the confines of the already existing and the newly created companies. EW Żarnowiec, which is owned by ESP S.A is already exploiting the wind power station in Lisewo, near Gniewno.

There are conditions favourable to develop wind energy in Poland; and the most important are among others the following:

- wind potential.

- the conditions of the Polish power industry policy, which are changing in favour of wind power industry.

- the possibility of joining to the power system.

- the duty to purchase energy produced from renewable sources by power plants, based on the Decree of the Minister of Economy of Decmber 15, 2000.

- the possibility of financial support provided by BOŚ, NFOŚ and world organizations, such as EBOR or Danish or German institutions.

- environmental awerness.

Biomass
Relatively rough statistics show that about 10 million tonnes of corn and rape straw is being burnt in the fields each year. The question that arises is whether Poland can afford such a wastefullness, or perhaps the mentioned products of harvest could be used in a better way?   | > |

Heat from straw
Generating 'clean' energy - from power of water, and renewable sources, that is wind, gas and biomass - has been an important issue all over the world for years.  | > |

Major achievements in the fields of research and technical developmen and environment protection
Several measures were undertaken in order to keep the equipment in an appropriate technical state, ensuring an environmentally safe operation of the power plant.   | > |
